During its inaugural meeting, IPAC’s Senor Knowledge Network on Regulatory Governance enjoyed an invigorating and thought provoking day. In addition to a couple of informed presentations, the discussion at the event helped sketch out the initial contours of the direction that immediate and mid-term future research and inquiry might take. Among the key concerns were:
Focus on the means and role for public engagement – particularly with an eye toward building greater public trust;
- Prospects for input accountability;
- Related concern for the potential in information and communication technology;
- Prospect of cooperation between regulators around matters of harmonization, recognition of standards, cooperative inspections and duplication;
- Need to better grapple with the role and positions of NGOs in the regulatory and rule-making process; and
- Explore compliance and enforcement in a non-proscriptive regulatory system.
The next meeting is scheduled for June 6th in Montreal.
