A new cross-government report from the U.K. Cabinet Office's Better Regulation Executive
A new cross-Government report promises to remove excessive bureaucracy and empower local government to deliver first class public services. The actions proposed in Consent Regimes: Reducing Unnecessary Bureaucracy give local authorities more freedom to take local decisions and free up valuable staff time. Led by the Cabinet Office's Better Regulation Executive (BRE) and the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister (ODPM), the report is a powerful example of joined-up government, and draws on feedback gathered directly from staff across local and central government. The report tackles existing consent regimes - where local councils must ask Whitehall for permission to take key decisions on local issues - and expects to produce the following key benefits: cutting red tape greater autonomy for local authorities to make local decisions quicker delivery of services to local citizens more time for staff to spend on other work.
